At least 14 government soldiers have been killed in an attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels south of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, a Yemeni military official confirmed to AFP on Sunday.
The official said government forces repelled a surprise attack by the Houthis in the Hays area, south of Hodeidah. The clashes, which began early Saturday, lasted for several hours.
The military official also said that several Houthi rebels had also been killed in the clashes, but he did not give a specific number of casualties.

But on Friday, the Houthi rebels threatened to attack airports and key installations in Saudi Arabia, the main backer of the Yemeni government. The rebel group, which is part of Iran’s anti-Israeli axis, accused Saudi Arabia of trying to prevent an Iranian plane from landing.
